When is Winter Camp?

Friday, January 12th – Monday, January 15th (MLK Weekend)

What ages is Winter Camp for?

There will be 3 different camps running the same weekend:

  • Elementary Camp: 3rd-5th grade
  • Middle School Camp: 6th-8th grade
  • High School Camp: 9th-12th grade

Why Winter Camp and not Summer Camp?

The NextGen team made a significant transition when it comes to camp a few years ago. We decided to offer Serving Trips (GO! Teams) in the summer and move the “Summer Camp” experience to the winter – hence the name, Winter Camp! While we’re talking about it, go ahead and mark your calendar for this summer’s GO! Teams (Our teams usually run the first two weeks of summer break).

Why should I send my child to Winter Camp?

Because it is awesome. Need another reason? Okay. We believe in small groups. We believe that relationships are important. Every week, your child has the opportunity to participate in a small group led by the same small group leader. This consistent relationship with them and their peers can lead to healthy growth relationally and spiritually. Winter Camp is extended time for a small group leader to invest in his/her group. Actually, a small group leader will get an entire years worth of time with his/her group while at Winter Camp. We see Winter Camp as a very strategic weekend.

Why does NextGen send all age groups away on the same weekend?

Although $299 may seem like a lot, summer camp tuition typically would set a family back more per student for a similar length summer camp. By taking all our age groups, we’re able to keep the cost lower than if we split the camp. We combine resources, staff and energy to pull off something better than we could if we separated the age groups. Lastly, we consider this weekend a major investment in the next generation. By having it on one weekend, we have staff and leaders from throughout Gateway who jump in and help. This may not always be our strategy, but it is for now!

How will I know what to bring?

An official Packing List will be posted under the “Resources” tab by December 3rd.

What time does Winter Camp begin on Friday and end on Monday?

We’ll be headed out shortly after school gets out on Friday, and returning Monday afternoon. Exact times will be listed on the schedule (found on the resource tab) by December 3rd.

How are the kids/students traveling to camp?

A combination of school buses and vans! We’ll have multiple school buses (it’s only an hour, right?) departing from the North Campus and a van or two from South Campus. Kids (3rd-5th grade) and Students (6th-12th grade) will ride on separate buses.

What happens at Winter Camp?

  • Late-night fun!
  • The infamous mud pit
  • Rock wall and zip line
  • Small group hangouts
  • High-energy worship/music
  • Relevant talks from staff and guest speakers
  • All kinds of other stuff

This is kind of weird. Does this mean 3rd graders are going to be hanging out with 12th graders?

Absolutely not! As much as 3rd graders might like that, 12th graders wouldn’t go for those arrangements. Although Gateway is taking over Camp Tejas for the weekend, the students and kids are in different programs. Although Middle School and High School will attend general sessions together, even these groups will be doing camp activities separately.

Are my kids going to be safe?

Absolutely! Safety is one of our highest values. We have incredible leaders and (appropriately trained) volunteers who love your kids. The majority of our camp leaders will be the same people who lead your children’s small groups each Sunday! They’ll be in very good hands.

Sounds good, how much does it cost?

Depends on when you register. Here is the breakdown:
$229: September 1 – September 3
$299: September 3 – December 3

Do I pay the full price when I register?

Not unless you want to. When you register, you have the option of paying a $50 non-refundable deposit per child registered. The remainder will automatically be charged to your card later.

Can my student invite a friend? What if they don’t attend Gateway?

Absolutely! We love it when our students invite their friends – especially if they don’t attend church at all. We do our best to room students by grade and gender, so be sure to have the guest mention that they’d like to be grouped with your student and we’ll do what we can to make that happen.

Is there any financial assistance for sending my student to Winter Camp?

Yes, there are limited funds available because of generous people who believe in what happens at Winter Camp. Stay tuned for more details to come. We typically do not offer scholarships beyond 50% of the price of camp and we do ask that families go ahead and register (you can just pay the $50 deposit for now) as well as apply for financial assistance. We will distribute scholarship funds in early November.
