The steps below are an overview of how to connect your computer to your TV for the Friday night experiece of Advance.
The first step to connecting your computer to your TV is to verify that your computer is capable of playing streaming services, which requires a browser that supports Flash content and an Internet connection fast enough to support the live stream. The easist way to do this is to do this is to attend one of Gateway's Internet services on Sunday. If you are able to see the video & hear the audio, you are ready for Step 2.
After you confirm that all is well with viewing the Internet Service, you need to identify the connections on your computer as well as your TV.
For Video connections, your TV should have one of the following:
For Audio connections, your TV more than likely has RCA Connections that are Red & White.
Once you have determined the video connection for your TV, take a look at your computer. Many laptop computers have VGA and/or S-Video outputs, which is great if your TV has those already. Note that some laptops come with an adapter that's external (this is the case with older Dell computers) and has RCA as well as S-Video outputs. If your computer does not have the same connection as your TV, you might need to look at adapters to convert the plug from your computer to a plug on your TV. Many of these adapters can be found at Monoprice.com for low prices. You will only need cable for video, so there is no need to get multiple cables.
To Connect the audio from your lapotp, which typically has a 3.5mm audio jack, to your TV, you will most likely need a 3.5mm to RCA cable. If your TV has a 3.5mm audio jack, then you just need a 3.5mm audio cable to connect the two.
Once you have all of the connections identified and cables in hand, simply connect your laptop's video interface to the appropriate interface on your TV and do the same for the audio interfaces.
After you connect the computer to the TV, select the appropriate input on your TV using the remote. Most TVs have an Input button, but some may have a button that's labeled TV/VCR. Next, configure your computer to output to the external display. On Macs, you will need to open the Displays Preference Pane to configure the external displays. On Windows computers, you will need to open the Display Settings under Control Panel. If you are running Linux, you don't need this tutorial.
This is also where you will want to try different screen resolutions (e.g. 1024×768, 1600×900, etc.) to determine what works best on your TV.
The audio should not require configuriation aside from volume adjustments.
Now that all of that is done, you can test using a previously recorded Gateway message or your favorite Youtube video.
If you have issues with the video stream, you might want to connect your computer to your broadband modem or router using a network cable. Although the WiFi connections are fast enough to support the stream, wired connections tend to be more consistent.
We are one church with one mission, led by one staff team, that meets in several different places at slightly different times. We share similar Sunday service experiences with the same teaching message via video, but the music and programming are live in each location.
