Why Worship?

MARCH 3

WHY WORSHIP?

Every week we sing at our weekend inspire services. The music is great, and the lyrics are inspiring. Even still, what does it mean to worship God through music? God is worthy of our devotion, and we serve, grow, give, and live out of gratitude for what He has done for us. Singing is the easiest form of worship, and even still doing so can transform us and activate the spiritual realm.

Work through the following questions and scriptures on your own, and get together with your running partner, life group, or friends and family to talk through what you are learning.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. When you hear the word Worship, what comes to mind?

2. What stood out to you from the message?

3. Read Psalm 95:1-7.

a.) Make some observations about this passage (What does the text say):

• Who is talking? What is the circumstance?

• Any repeated phrases?

• What surprised you?

• What stood out to you?

b.) Make some interpretations (What does the passage mean)

• What questions do you have?

• Summarize the passage in 1-3 sentences – what are the main points?

• What do you learn about the nature and character of God as you read this?

• What do you learn about yourself or the world around you?

c.) Now make some applications (what’s my response)

• How do you respond to what you are reading?

• How could this apply to your life today?

• What is the central truth that you could put into practice from this?

• Who could you share this with for the sake of encouragement?

4. All humans are worshipers. The question isn’t whether or not we worship… but who/what is the object of our devotion. When God isn’t the object of your worship, what is?

5. You come to resemble whatever it is that you worship. You become like whatever you orient your life around. How has the thing/person/idea you acknowledged on the last question shaped who you are and what you look like.? (ie: I worship money and security when I’m not focusing on God, and that has caused me to live with a scarcity mindset that leads to me feeling insecure and worried.)

   6. Read Matthew 11:28-30. When we worship Jesus we began to look more like him. In what ways would you like to look more like Jesus? What holds you back from living a life worshiping Him?

KEY SCRIPTURE

Psalm 95:1-7 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice,

Matthew 11:28-30  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
