"How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity!"
Psalm 133:1
Our schools are an intersection point for a wide variety of people and interests. Parents and families bring their values and goals, government policy dictates another set of priorities, and school administrators are constantly bringing their own directives to bear on local challenges. Teachers sit at the crossroads of all these competing voices, charged with the instruction and care of students, but often feeling overwhelmed, alone, and criticized.
What if teachers instead could experience unity with parents, administrators, and governing officials? How would it change a teacher’s mindset and attitude if they knew that all these groups had their back rather than pointing a finger at their shortcomings? While there is a need for constructive criticism and improvement, what if they first felt the partnership of all these groups?
God knows the stakes of what is happening in our classrooms, and he understands the challenging position that teachers are in, so let’s ask for his help in bringing unity and solidarity to them. Our prayers can “run defense” for the hypercritical voices and lenses that are projected onto teachers, opening the door to a spirit of grace, oneness, and support. Teaching is hard enough – let’s ask God to bring the wind of parental & governmental support to the backs of our teachers.
Practice: Make this your own
Today and in the coming week, when you see an American or Texas state flag - pray for the working relationship between government officials, parents, and teachers. Perhaps choose a school near where you live and pray consistently for that specific environment when you see a flag.
You may also benefit from seeking out individuals to talk with – parents with children of school age or a local teacher - to learn about the specific challenges they are encountering as the school year progresses. What if you committed to following up with them at periodic intervals (once every 2 months?) just to touch base and find out how you can pray?
