Treasure: Generosity With Our Finances

November 9th, 2025

Big Idea: Our finances reveal where our hearts truly are, and God calls us to trust Him by giving generously.

Key Question: What does my giving say about where my heart is?

Lean In

  • Think about a time when you gave something away — your time, money, or even something personal — and it stretched your faith.
  • What emotions did you feel before, during, and after that moment?
  • How did that act of generosity affect your relationship with God?
  • Why do you think conversations about money can be uncomfortable for people — even in church?

Look Up
Read 1 Timothy 6:5–19 aloud together. You may want to assign verses to different readers.

Observation — What does the text say?

  • What repeated words, phrases, or themes do you notice in this passage?
  • What stands out to you about Paul’s tone and focus as he instructs Timothy?
  • How does Paul contrast the pursuit of wealth with the pursuit of godliness?
  • What emotions or warnings do you sense in Paul’s words about the “love of money”?
  • What do you notice about God’s character in verses 13–16? What words or descriptions about Him are used?

Interpretation — What does the text mean?

  • What is Paul teaching about contentment in verses 6–8?
  • What does it mean to “fight the good fight of faith” (v. 12) in the context of money and generosity?
  • What do you learn about God from this passage?
  • What do you learn about human nature and our relationship to wealth?
  • Why do you think Paul warns us not to “put our hope in wealth”? What’s the danger in doing so?
  • What does Paul mean by “the life that is truly life” (v. 19)? How would you describe that life in your own words?

Application — How should I respond?

  • How are you encouraged, challenged, or convicted by this passage?
  • What is one area of your life where fear may be holding you back from being more generous?
  • What might it look like for you to “take hold of the life that is truly life” this week?
  • Paul says God “richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” How does this truth reshape how you view your possessions?
  • What step of obedience or trust might God be calling you to take in response to this passage?

Reflect & Grow

(Engage people to think personally and spiritually about growth and trust.)

Jesus said in Matthew 6:21: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
How does your giving reflect what your heart values most?

What fears or false securities might keep you from trusting God fully in this area?

Read 2 Corinthians 9:7–8: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver…”
What would it take for you to move from reluctant giving to cheerful, faith-filled giving?

How can our group encourage one another to live with open hands — to be generous with time, resources, and love?

PRAYER

Prayer Focus: Trusting God with our resources and fighting fear with faith.

“Father, thank You for being our Provider and our portion. We confess that we often cling to what we have instead of trusting You. Free us from fear and fill us with faith. Teach us to be generous, not out of guilt, but out of gratitude. Let our giving reflect Your heart, and let us take hold of the life that is truly life. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

PRACTICE – STEP OUT

Here are a few simple, practical ways to live out what we’ve learned this week:

  1. Take Inventory
Spend some time this week reviewing how you use your money, time, and resources.  Pray over your budget or calendar and ask, “What does this reveal about my heart?”  Write down one change you can make to reflect greater trust in God.
  2. Give Intentionally
Choose one way to be generous this week.
    • It could be a financial gift to someone in need,
    • an act of service for a neighbor,
    • or volunteering time at a local ministry.
Do it quietly, not for recognition, but to practice freedom and joy in giving.
  1. Encourage a Generous Culture
As a group, consider finding one way to collectively bless someone — perhaps a family in need, a missionary partner, or a local outreach effort tied to our community
